Alfred H. Maurer (1868, 1932) was an American modernist painter who began his career as a successful academic portraitist before being transformed by his exposure to the Fauvist and Cubist movements in Paris. He became one of the earliest American artists to embrace European modernism, developing a bold, expressive style characterized by vivid color and fragmented forms. Despite critical recognition abroad, he struggled for acceptance in the United States and tragically took his own life shortly after the death of his domineering father.
