Allan Ramsay (1713, 1784) was a leading Scottish portrait painter who became one of the most celebrated artists in 18th-century Britain. Trained in Edinburgh, London, and Italy, he developed an elegant and psychologically perceptive style that earned him the position of Principal Painter in Ordinary to King George III in 1767. His portraits, particularly of women, are noted for their delicate brushwork, refined colour harmonies, and subtle sense of character.
