Alfred Stieglitz (1864, 1946) was a pioneering American photographer and influential editor who championed photography as a fine art through his publications Camera Notes and Camera Work, as well as his galleries 291 and An American Place. As editor of Camera Work (1903, 1917), he published groundbreaking images and essays that elevated photography alongside modernist painting and sculpture, introducing European avant-garde art to American audiences. His own photographic work, including the landmark Equivalents series and portraits of Georgia O'Keeffe, remains central to the history of modern art.
