Alfred Jacob Miller (1810, 1874) was an American painter best known for his vivid depictions of the American West, Native American life, and the fur trade era. He gained renown after accompanying Scottish nobleman Sir William Drummond Stewart on an expedition to the Rocky Mountains in 1837, becoming one of the first artists to document the region. His works provide an invaluable visual record of a rapidly vanishing frontier culture and way of life.
