Balthasar Burkhard (1944, 2010) was a Swiss photographer celebrated for his large-scale black-and-white photographs that explore the human body, landscape, and the animal world with a monumental, meditative quality. He began his career as an assistant to Harald Szeemann and worked as a documentary photographer before developing his distinctive fine art practice characterized by aerial perspectives and close cropped, abstracted views of skin, earth, and flesh. His work occupies a significant place in contemporary European photography for its ability to transform familiar subjects into vast, almost sculptural presences.
