Chiyū Uemae (上前智祐) was a Japanese painter born in 1920 in Osaka, Japan, who became a prominent figure in the postwar Japanese avant-garde art scene. He was a founding member of the Gutai Art Association in 1954, working alongside Jiro Yoshihara and other pioneering artists who sought to push the boundaries of traditional painting through radical experimentation with materials and process. His work is characterized by layered, textural surfaces created through unconventional techniques, and his paintings have been sold at major international auction houses including Christie's and Sotheby's.
