Kikuo Saito

Kikuo Saito (1939, 2016) was a Japanese-American painter known for his vibrant, lyrical abstract canvases that blend gestural expressionism with a refined sense of color and movement. Born in Tokyo, he moved to New York in the 1960s where he became deeply embedded in the downtown arts scene, working as a lighting designer for avant-garde theater while developing his distinctive painting practice. His works are characterized by translucent, layered washes of color that evoke landscape, light, and emotional resonance, placing him within the tradition of late American abstract painting.
