Albert Pinkham Ryder was an American visionary painter known for his deeply atmospheric, moonlit seascapes and allegorical compositions rendered in richly layered paint. A largely self-taught artist, he worked in isolation in New York City, obsessively reworking canvases over years with unstable pigment mixtures that have caused many of his works to crack and darken over time. His haunting, dreamlike imagery placed him among the most distinctive and poetic voices in 19th-century American art.
