Dr Pabscht het z'Schpiez ...

1991

Sigmar Polke 's  Dr Pabscht het z'Schpiez s'Schpäckbschteck z'schpät bschteut (Parkett No. 30) is a signed mixed-media multiple published by Parkett Publishers in 1991. Executed as a digital print on vinyl with acrylic lacquer and mounted on stretcher, the artwork is catalogued as Becker/von der Osten 91. The deliberately absurd title, a Swiss-German tongue twister loosely translating to "The Pope ordered the bacon cutlery in Spiez too late," reflects Polke's characteristic linguistic wit and subversive humor. The image depicts an open case containing two crossed spoons, a motif originally derived from a 19th-century mail-order catalogue and later appropriated by Max Ernst in his Surrealist collages. By reappropriating this already mediated image, Sigmar Polke layers historical references, reproduction techniques, and ironic detachment. The limited edition artwork exemplifies Polke's long-standing investigation into authorship, appropriation, and the instability of meaning. Combining mechanical reproduction with painterly surface treatment through acrylic lacquer, the art edition blurs distinctions between print, painting, and object. As part of the influential Parkett edition series, this multiple represents an important example of Polke's edition practice and his enduring contribution to postwar conceptual, postmodern and Pop Art . Published in 1991 in a limited edition of 100 plus Roman-numeral copies,  Dr Pabscht het z'Schpiez s'Schpäckbschteck z'schpät bschteut (Parkett No. 30) is hand-signed and numbered by the artist.
