Shepard Fairey — Printing Press 1/3
Shepard Fairey

Printing Press 1/3

2017

Printing Press 1/3 pays homage to the foundational technology of mass communication and political dissent, rendered through the meticulous process of mono-engraving on aluminum. For Shepard Fairey, whose entire practice is rooted in the democratic power of printed imagery — from wheatpaste posters to silkscreens plastered across city walls — the printing press is a deeply personal and ideological symbol of the artist's own lineage. The choice of aluminum as a substrate creates an ironic layering: an industrial, post-digital material bearing the image of an analogue machine that once democratised information. As the first work in its triptych series, Printing Press introduces the recurring theme of communication, power, and the mechanisms through which ideas are spread or suppressed. The mono-engraving technique honours the tactile, labour-intensive heritage of printmaking while asserting its continued relevance in an age of algorithmic media.
