Sarah Meyohas — Light Speculation #2
Sarah Meyohas

Light Speculation #2

2023

Light Speculation #2 draws the eye into a vertiginous corridor of reflections, conjuring the sensation of depth without end. Produced through the careful manipulation of physical reflective surfaces within a traditional photographic studio, this large-scale C-print belongs to a body of work that Sarah Meyohas developed in direct conceptual dialogue with blockchain technology and the nature of value itself. The perspectival tunnel that recedes across the picture plane functions as both optical phenomenon and philosophical proposition, asking how meaning and worth are generated through an artistic gesture, and where, precisely, that value resides. The work carries a history that gives it unusual intellectual weight within the landscape of contemporary photography. In February 2015, Meyohas launched Bitchcoin, one of the earliest artist-issued social tokens, a cryptocurrency that could be exchanged in perpetuity for her photographic work. Each original Bitchcoin was backed by a five-inch by five-inch portion of the Speculations photographs, collapsing the boundary between image, currency, and contract. Light Speculation #2 is thus not merely a formally compelling object but a document of an expanded practice that prefigured widespread cultural conversation around art, blockchain, and alternative economies. Presented in an edition of six and accompanied by the artist's signature, the work arrives framed and at a substantial scale of 152.4 by 101.6 centimetres, commanding presence on the wall while rewarding sustained, close attention. For collectors drawn to photography that thinks rigorously about its own conditions, Light Speculation #2 represents a rare convergence of material beauty, critical intelligence, and documented art historical significance.
