Sarah Meyohas — Light Speculation #1
Sarah Meyohas

Light Speculation #1

2023

Light Speculation #1 draws the eye into a seemingly boundless corridor of reflected light, conjured not through digital manipulation but through the careful orchestration of physical mirrors within a traditional photographic studio. Sarah Meyohas achieves the illusion of infinite recession using analogue means, producing a large-format C-Print that pulses with optical tension. The resulting image sits at the intersection of conceptual rigour and sensory seduction, inviting prolonged looking while quietly posing harder questions about value, perception, and the nature of financial abstraction. The work carries unusual provenance within Meyohas's practice. In February 2015, she launched Bitchcoin, one of the earliest artist-created social tokens, a cryptocurrency that could be exchanged in perpetuity for her photographs. Each original Bitchcoin was backed by a five-inch by five-inch section of her Speculations series, the very body of work to which Light Speculation #1 belongs. That gesture reframed the photograph not merely as an aesthetic object but as a unit of stored value, turning the act of image-making into a meditation on how worth is conjured and transferred. The mirrored tunnels in these photographs became a literal and poetic reflection of blockchain logic, a system in which trust and value are produced through replication and mutual recognition rather than fixed material substance. At 152.4 by 101.6 centimetres, the work commands physical presence while retaining the refined finish expected of serious photographic editions. Signed by the artist and available through Nguyen Wahed Gallery, Light Speculation #1 represents a compelling acquisition for collectors interested in the convergence of photography, economic theory, and conceptual art. Its relevance only deepens as broader conversations around digital value and the financialisation of creative work continue to evolve.
