Two Truths and a Lie
2021
Two Truths and a Lie presents a commanding large-scale sheet of paper coated in black gesso, into which Samantha Roth has drawn with colored pencil to conjure imagery of striking optical and emotional density. The deep matte ground absorbs light rather than reflecting it, giving the colored marks an almost luminous quality as they emerge from the darkness with quiet insistence. At 190.5 by 133.3 centimeters, the work commands significant physical presence, and its scale reinforces the psychological weight suggested by the title, a phrase borrowed from a common social ritual in which deception and disclosure become indistinguishable from one another. Roth works consistently at the intersection of intimacy and uncertainty, using labor-intensive drawing processes to build surfaces that reward sustained looking. The choice of colored pencil on gessoed paper is characteristically deliberate for the artist, a pairing that creates productive tension between the delicate, handmade quality of the mark and the theatrically darkened field on which it appears. The result is a work that feels simultaneously confessional and withholding, generous in its visual detail yet resistant to easy resolution. Available through Public Gallery and signed by the artist, Two Truths and a Lie represents a strong example of Roth's mature practice and would make a substantial addition to any collection focused on contemporary works on paper. Given the work's scale and the physical integrity of the hand-applied surface, collectors are advised to consult with the gallery regarding appropriate framing and installation, as no frame is currently included.
