Perfect Strangers

2023

Perfect Strangers draws the eye into a field of deep, light-absorbing black gesso, across which Samantha Roth constructs her signature vocabulary of fragmented figures and charged psychological space. Working in colored pencil on paper, Roth layers translucent marks over the unforgiving ground, coaxing forms from darkness rather than imposing them upon a neutral surface. The result is a composition that feels both excavated and invented, as though the subjects have always existed within the paper and the artist's hand simply made them visible. At a substantial 139.7 by 96.5 centimeters, the work commands the wall with a presence that belies its medium. Colored pencil, often associated with intimacy and modest scale, here operates at an almost confrontational register, each stroke visible as deliberate evidence of sustained attention. Roth's handling of the black gesso ground creates passages of near-total absorption punctuated by moments where color asserts itself with quiet insistence, building a tension between concealment and disclosure that animates the entire surface. Perfect Strangers is a strong example of the atmospheric intensity Roth has developed within her practice, combining rigorous material discipline with an emotional register that is immediately felt and slowly unpacked. The work is signed and offered directly through Public Gallery, arriving without a frame, allowing collectors the opportunity to determine a presentation that best suits the work's commanding and contemplative character.
