Consequential Landscape
2020
Consequential Landscape draws the eye into a richly layered terrain built entirely from Mimi Lauter's characteristic application of oil pastel and soft pastel on paper. Completed in 2020, the work pulses with the dense, tactile energy for which Lauter has become celebrated, her marks accumulating into an almost geological compression of color and texture. The landscape, if it can be called that in any conventional sense, refuses to settle into a single reading. Forms press against one another with urgent intimacy, suggesting both the geological and the organic, the observed and the invented. Lauter works primarily from imagination and emotional memory, treating the pastoral as a site of psychological weight rather than picturesque ease. In this piece, that approach yields something genuinely consequential, as the title implies, a surface that carries the feeling of aftermath and transformation. The relatively intimate scale, just under 35 by 50 centimeters, intensifies rather than diminishes the work's presence. Every centimeter rewards close attention, with passages of soft pastel dissolving into areas of heavier, more insistent oleaginous buildup, the two media in constant productive tension. For collectors drawn to works that sit comfortably at the intersection of drawing and painting, Consequential Landscape represents Lauter at a particularly focused moment in her practice. The work is signed and in excellent condition. Offered through Mendes Wood DM, it presents a meaningful opportunity to acquire a compact yet deeply felt example of one of the more compelling voices currently working in this medium.
