Grandfather Clock The Father

2018

Maarten Baas's Grandfather Clock The Father is a monumental functional sculpture standing over two metres tall, crafted from brass and bronze, in which a 12 hour looping digital performance replaces traditional clockwork mechanisms. A person lives inside the clock face, continuously drawing and redrawing the correct time minute by minute, transforming timekeeping into an intimate human act. Part of the celebrated Baas Real Time series, this work challenges the viewer to reconsider time as a purely human construct rather than a mechanical one. The edition includes a Certificate of Authenticity issued by the gallery and an additional signature bronze plate.
