After Memling's Portrait of Jacob Obrecht
2013
A striking reinterpretation of Hans Memling's 15th-century masterwork, Kehinde Wiley transplants his subject — a contemporary Black man — into the formal, dignified compositional language of Northern Renaissance portraiture. Rendered in meticulous oil on panel, the work challenges the historical exclusion of Black figures from the Western canon by asserting presence and authority within one of its most revered traditions. The hand-fabricated frame, gilded with 22K gold leaf and designed by the artist himself, extends Wiley's vision beyond the picture plane, transforming the work into a total object that commands both reverence and reexamination.
