I ๐ Karen Barad
2020
"I ๐ Karen Barad" is a 2020 inkjet print on paper by Los Angeles-based artist Jennifer Moon, measuring 27.9 ร 45.1 cm and issued in an edition of ten. The work declares its allegiance to the physicist and feminist theorist Karen Barad, whose concept of ethico-onto-epistem-ology proposes that being, knowing, and ethics are not separate categories but rather inseparable, mutually constitutive phenomena entangled at a quantum level. In adopting the vernacular intimacy of a heart emoji alongside a proper name, Moon collapses the distance between rigorous theoretical discourse and the registers of popular culture, self-expression, and affective life, a characteristic move in their broader practice of treating intellectual frameworks as lived, embodied commitments rather than purely academic abstractions. Moon's work operates across social systems, power relations, scientific theory, and emotional experience, tracing the ways these forces are co-produced and perpetuated through bodies of all kinds, human and nonhuman, material and immaterial. Drawing on queer life, personal history, and speculative possibility, their practice consistently works to reconfigure inherited hierarchies and open new imaginaries beyond binary thinking. This print sits comfortably within that vision, functioning simultaneously as a love letter, a theoretical proposition, and a quietly subversive object. Moon has exhibited and performed widely at institutions including the Hammer Museum, the Getty Center, and Tina Kim Gallery, and is a recipient of a Creative Capital Award and the Harpo Foundation Grant for Visual Artists. The work is signed by the artist and offered as part of the Venice Art Walk Benefit Auction.
