Cloud of Petals Interactive VR Experience #5
2017
A cascade of rose petals fills the virtual space of Cloud of Petals Interactive VR Experience #5, immersing the viewer in a sensory environment where the boundary between the physical and the digital dissolves entirely. Created in 2017, this work originates from Sarah Meyohas's ambitious performance at Bell Works in New Jersey, during which dozens of workers stripped 100,000 rose petals by hand while their movements were simultaneously captured and translated into data. The petals became both raw material and metaphor, standing in for the invisible labor that underlies technological systems and the vast human effort encoded within digital infrastructure. Meyohas positions the viewer not as a passive observer but as an active participant, able to move through the swirling field of petals and experience the work as a kind of living archive. The VR format allows the piece to exist as an endlessly renewable encounter, collapsing the singular moment of performance into something perpetually present. This tension between ephemerality and preservation sits at the heart of Meyohas's practice, which consistently interrogates how value is assigned, recorded, and transmitted within economies both financial and emotional. Offered directly through Meyohas, this signed digital file represents a collectible edition of a landmark project in the artist's body of work. As institutions and private collectors deepen their engagement with digital and immersive formats, Cloud of Petals stands as an early and critically recognized example of VR as genuine fine art medium. Its combination of conceptual rigor, aesthetic lushness, and participatory design makes it a compelling and forward-looking acquisition.
