Douglas Gordon — Self portrait of you + me, (Humphrey Bogart)
Douglas Gordon

Self portrait of you + me, (Humphrey Bogart)

2006

A gelatin silver print of Humphrey Bogart has been burned away, leaving behind a residue of ash smeared across a mirrored surface, so that the viewer's own reflection mingles with the ghostly remnants of the iconic Hollywood star. Gordon collapses the boundary between self and idol, implicating the viewer in an act of both devotion and destruction. The work meditates on desire, celebrity, and the consuming nature of our relationships with screen images.
