Sculpture/Configuration 2T

2018

Sculpture/Configuration 2T presents a vertical column of acrylic that seems to negotiate its own presence within any space it inhabits. Completed in 2018, the work extends Robert Irwin's decades-long investigation into perception, light, and the conditions under which objects make themselves known to a viewer. Standing at over three meters tall yet maintaining a slender, almost reticent footprint, the sculpture neither announces itself aggressively nor recedes into passivity. Instead, it participates in a quiet dialogue with ambient light, catching and refracting it in ways that shift continuously depending on the viewer's position, the time of day, and the specific qualities of the surrounding environment. Irwin has long resisted the idea that art is a fixed, finite thing, and this work embodies that resistance with characteristic precision. The acrylic material carries light rather than merely reflecting it, lending the sculpture a quality that feels less like solid matter and more like a condensed atmospheric condition. The dimensions, 302.3 by 91.4 by 81.3 centimeters, are not arbitrary. They are calibrated to place the work in a register that is emphatically physical and human in scale, inviting bodily awareness as much as optical contemplation. Offered through Sprüth Magers, Sculpture/Configuration 2T represents a refined and mature statement from one of the most consequential figures in postwar American art, a work that rewards sustained attention and deepens meaningfully within a considered private collection.
