Fontaine Saint-Michel
1860
This monumental bronze fountain depicts Saint Michael the Archangel triumphantly standing atop a demon, wings spread wide and arms raised skyward in a gesture of divine victory. Installed in 1860 at Place Saint-Michel in Paris, the work by sculptor Francisque-Joseph Duret embodies the Romantic era's fascination with religious allegory and heroic narrative sculpture. The figure emerges from an ornate architectural niche framed by rose-colored marble columns and an arched stone surround, while cascading water flows from the pedestal below, animating the composition. The bronze darkens with patina while birds perch atop the outstretched wings, suggesting the sculpture's integration into the living urban landscape. A quintessential example of nineteenth-century public monument sculpture, the fountain remains one of Paris's most recognizable religious artworks, blending classical sculptural tradition with Beaux-Arts architectural grandeur.
