Indigenous Woman
2018
Presented as both a framed digital C-print and a 124-page offset-printed artist magazine, "Indigenous Woman" (2018) stands as one of Martine Gutierrez's most ambitious and conceptually rigorous works. Conceived entirely by Gutierrez herself, the project takes the form of a fully realized fashion publication, complete with editorial spreads, product advertisements, and a letter from the editor. Every element, from staging and lighting to makeup, costuming, and photography, was executed by the artist, who also serves as the sole model throughout. The result is a sweeping, immersive critique of media representation that centers Indigenous, trans, and Latinx identity with precision and wit, reclaiming the visual grammar of commercial culture on the artist's own terms. The work's formal ambition is matched by its critical reach. By adopting and subverting the conventions of high-fashion publishing, Gutierrez forces a reckoning with the industries and imagery that have historically excluded or commodified marginalized bodies. The 124-page magazine accompanying this framed cover print transforms the work into a collector's object of rare depth, one that rewards sustained engagement across multiple readings and viewings. Since its debut, this body of work has earned international recognition, including presentation at the 58th Venice Biennale, and examples are held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, among others. This signed work is presented in conservation framing courtesy of Chelsea Frames and is being offered through the Bailey House Benefit Auction. It represents a meaningful opportunity to acquire a significant piece from a pivotal moment in Gutierrez's practice, by an artist whose work continues to gain both critical and institutional prominence worldwide.
