Agate cup on foot

1640

A goblet of refined proportions crafted from reddish brown agate, its hemispheric bowl rising from a slender pedestal and supported by an ornamental foot. The stone's natural veining and translucent qualities are visible across the surface, creating subtle patterns of warm ochre and cream against deeper burgundy tones. The vessel is mounted with enameled gold ornaments at the juncture between bowl and stem, and the base is encircled with a decorative band of colorful enamelwork depicting miniature floral and figural motifs in blue, yellow, green, and white. The work exemplifies the virtuosic hardstone carving and precious metal mounting practiced by seventeenth century French craftsmen.
