The Hand of Man
1910
A powerful photogravure by Alfred Stieglitz, *The Hand of Man* depicts a locomotive emerging through a haze of smoke and steam along a network of industrial railway tracks, capturing the raw energy of modern industry at the turn of the twentieth century. Stieglitz masterfully uses the dense atmospheric conditions to create a dramatic interplay of light and shadow, elevating an industrial scene into a work of fine art. This example is signed, titled, and dated in pencil in the margin, with a printed title and date on a Museum of Modern Art collection label affixed to the reverse of the flush-mount.
