Mesoamerican Negative Space 1
2018
Mesoamerican Negative Space 1 is a commanding large-scale work in which Gala Porras-Kim renders the voids, gaps, and absences within Mesoamerican archaeological records rather than the objects themselves. Executed in graphite on paper and sealed beneath epoxy resin set within a metal frame, the piece measures nearly two by three meters, giving the drawn marks a monumental physical presence that rewards sustained looking. The resin surface introduces a luminous, almost geological depth, so that the graphite traces appear suspended rather than simply laid upon the paper, reinforcing the idea that what is being preserved here is something fundamentally immaterial. Porras-Kim, whose practice frequently interrogates the conventions of archival and museum systems, is particularly attentive to how colonial collection practices have shaped what survives and what disappears from the historical record. This work belongs to a body of research in which the artist studies pre-Columbian artifacts held in institutional collections, focusing on the structural silences embedded in those holdings. Rather than depicting relics, she maps the informational lacunae surrounding them, treating absence as a subject worthy of the same careful attention traditionally reserved for the object itself. For collectors, Mesoamerican Negative Space 1 offers a rare intersection of conceptual rigor and material refinement. The work sits confidently within conversations around post-colonial critique, archival theory, and drawing as an expanded practice, while remaining visually arresting at a domestic or institutional scale. Currently presented through Labor, Mexico City, it represents a significant statement from one of the more thoughtful conceptual voices working across Latin American and international contemporary art today.
