Elliptical Glass "First Cause"

2024

This unique light installation by James Turrell features a recessed elliptical aperture set into the wall, emitting a softly luminous field of shifting color that transitions between deep pink and cool blue tones, producing a compelling illusion of spatial depth emerging from an apparently flat surface. The work belongs to Turrell's Elliptical Glass series, which extends his foundational Shallow Space Constructions of the late 1960s into a technologically advanced context through computer controlled LED systems that allow precise modulation of color, intensity, and temporal duration. Measuring 60 by 42 inches, the piece uses etched or frosted glass to mediate light emission while the slight recession of the aperture into the wall dissolves the boundary between artwork and architectural environment. As a unique work, it represents one of the most direct expressions of Turrell's lifelong investigation into light as a perceptual and spatial medium and his concept of heightened awareness of seeing yourself seeing.
