Dwyer Kilcollin — Bouquet, date line
Dwyer Kilcollin

Bouquet, date line

2015

Bouquet, date line presents a striking accumulation of materials suspended and resolved into a form that hovers between the geological and the domestic. Kilcollin constructs this work from resin, felzbar, calcium carbonate, quartz, silica, and glass, layering substances drawn from both industrial and mineral origins into a unified sculptural object. The result carries an internal luminosity, as light moves through and across translucent and crystalline surfaces, animating the piece differently depending on the conditions of its display. At 61 by 45.7 by 48.3 centimeters, the work occupies physical space with quiet authority, its modest scale belying the density of material and conceptual attention embedded within it. Kilcollin's practice engages consistently with the tension between natural formation and human fabrication, and Bouquet, date line exemplifies this interest with particular clarity. The title introduces a botanical metaphor into an object built from resolutely non-organic matter, suggesting arrangement, offering, and the passage of time simultaneously. Calcium carbonate and quartz carry associations with sedimentation and slow geological process, while resin and glass invoke manufacturing and the fixing of form. This collision of timescales and material histories gives the work a layered significance that rewards sustained looking and continued cohabitation. Completed in 2015 and bearing the artist's signature, the piece represents Kilcollin working at full confidence within a material vocabulary that distinguishes his output within contemporary sculpture. The work is currently held at American Contemporary and is offered without a frame, as the object stands wholly and intentionally on its own terms.
