Country Bouquet with Hibiscus
1989
Country Bouquet with Hibiscus is a signature work from Tom Wesselmann's innovative series in which line drawings were translated into interconnected pieces of laser cut steel that were then painted, producing bold flat color imagery with a sculptural relief quality. The composition features a vivid arrangement of red tulips, purple chrysanthemums, a yellow daffodil, and red hibiscus blooms bursting from a dark vase against a cream ground. Wesselmann was a central figure of American Pop Art whose still life and floral subjects transformed everyday imagery into monumental graphic statements. This work was exhibited in the survey exhibition Tom Wesselmann: Seascapes, Still Lifes, and Nudes at Gagosian Athens, running from March 17 to May 30, 2026.
