JPW3 — P Anechoic
JPW3

P Anechoic

2014

P Anechoic presents a large-scale field of muted, absorptive surface in which JPW3's signature application of wax and ink creates a chromatic depth that resists easy reading. Completed in 2014, the work operates at the threshold between painting and material investigation, with the encaustic-adjacent quality of the wax lending the canvas a presence that is simultaneously luminous and deadened, as though light is drawn in rather than reflected outward. At 213.4 × 152.4 cm, the scale is immersive, positioning the viewer within an environment rather than simply before an object. The title gestures toward acoustic science, where an anechoic chamber is a space engineered to eliminate echo and reverberation. JPW3 translates this concept into visual terms, constructing a surface that seems to swallow mark-making rather than display it, foregrounding the process of suppression as its own expressive act. The ink, suspended and sealed within layers of wax, exists in a state of perpetual tension, present but muffled, assertive yet contained. This interplay between visibility and concealment gives the work a meditative intensity well suited to significant private or institutional collections. Signed by the artist and offered in unframed condition, P Anechoic is currently available through Phillips and represents a strong example of JPW3's mature engagement with materiality, perception, and the phenomenology of surface. Collectors drawn to process-led abstraction with a rigorous conceptual foundation will find in this work a compelling and intellectually resonant acquisition.
