Ovoid (Titanium Silver)
2018
Ovoid (Titanium Silver) confronts the viewer with an object that seems to belong to no fixed category, hovering between geological formation, aerospace material, and living membrane. Blow molded from acrylic and finished in a luminous titanium silver, the work's domed, slightly flattened form catches and redistributes ambient light in ways that shift continuously depending on the viewer's position. The surface carries a faint iridescence, flickering between cool silver, pale rose, and near-white, so that the piece appears to breathe rather than simply reflect. At 59 by 39 centimeters, the work occupies a scale that feels bodily and intimate, yet its convex face distorts the surrounding room into a compressed, otherworldly panorama. Gisela Colón has built her practice around what she describes as the transformation of pure light into matter, and this 2018 work stands as one of the more concentrated expressions of that ambition. The blow molding process introduces an organic irregularity that distinguishes the Ovoid series from industrial fabrication, lending each piece a subtle uniqueness beneath its high-gloss exterior. The tension between apparent weightlessness and implied density is central to the work's psychological charge. Collectors drawn to minimalism, to the legacy of California's Light and Space movement, or to the convergence of fine art and advanced material culture will find in this piece a rare object that satisfies optical, conceptual, and tactile demands simultaneously. Offered through Danysz Gallery and signed by the artist, the work comes without a frame, intended to be mounted directly and allowed to command its wall as an autonomous presence.
