Winfred Rembert was an African-American artist known for his deeply personal works depicting scenes of the Jim Crow South and his own harrowing experiences, including his near-lynching and time on a Georgia chain gang. He created intricate, vivid artworks by carving and tooling leather canvases and applying shoe dye, a technique he learned while incarcerated. His self-taught practice produced a remarkable body of work that stands as both autobiography and historical testimony.
