Toyen (born Marie Čermínová) was a Czech avant-garde artist and key figure of the Prague Surrealist Group, renowned for her provocative, dreamlike imagery that defied gender norms and explored eroticism, violence, and the unconscious. She adopted the gender-neutral pseudonym 'Toyen' early in her career and moved to Paris in 1947, where she remained closely associated with the international Surrealist movement until her death. Her work is celebrated for its haunting, poetic quality and its radical interrogation of identity, desire, and freedom.
