Thomas Hudson (1701, 1779) was one of the most prominent British portrait painters of the eighteenth century, serving as the leading portraitist in England before the rise of his pupil Sir Joshua Reynolds. Trained under Jonathan Richardson, Hudson built an enormously successful studio practice in London, producing refined and dignified likenesses of aristocrats, scholars, and public figures. His technically accomplished works are held in major collections including the National Portrait Gallery, London, and the Tate.
