Sir Peter Lely was a Dutch-born painter who became the dominant portrait artist at the English royal court. He spent nearly his entire career in England, serving as Principal Painter to King Charles II. Lely was naturalized as an English subject and knighted in 1680, leaving a lasting legacy in 17th-century portraiture.
