The Senufo people of Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, and Burkina Faso have produced ceremonial masks for centuries, primarily used in the rituals of the Poro society, a male initiation organization central to Senufo spiritual and social life. These masks, often depicting hybrid animal-human forms with elongated features and abstract geometric elements, are carved by hereditary artisan castes known as the Kpeembele. Collected by Western museums and auction houses since the early 20th century, Senufo masks have achieved significant recognition in the African art market and influenced modernist artists including Picasso and Matisse.
