Richard Billingham is a British photographer and filmmaker best known for his raw and intimate documentary series 'Ray's a Laugh' (1996), which depicted his family's impoverished life in a West Midlands tower block, featuring his alcoholic father Ray and obese mother Liz. His unflinching, snapshot-aesthetic photographs blurred the boundaries between fine art and documentary photography, earning him a Turner Prize nomination in 2001. Billingham's work is celebrated for its emotional honesty and its challenging of class representation and social documentary traditions in contemporary British art.
