Raimonds Staprans is a Latvian-American painter born in 1926 in Riga, Latvia, who fled Europe during World War II and eventually settled in California, where he became associated with the Bay Area figurative and California art scenes. Known for his bold, luminous still lifes and landscapes, Staprans employs vivid, intensely saturated colors and strong geometric compositions that give everyday objects a monumental, almost transcendent quality. His work bridges European modernist traditions with a distinctly Californian sensibility, earning him recognition as one of the most important painters working on the West Coast in the latter half of the twentieth century.
