The Olmec civilization, flourishing along the Gulf Coast of Mexico between approximately 1500 and 400 BCE, produced some of Mesoamerica's most enigmatic and powerful stone sculptures. Crouching transformation figures represent a distinctive category of Olmec portable sculpture, depicting shamanic figures in the process of transforming between human and jaguar or supernatural states. These objects, carved from jade, serpentine, or basalt, served as ritual objects embodying the spiritual authority of Olmec rulers and priests.
