Nicolaes Pietersz. Berchem was a prolific Dutch Golden Age painter renowned for his luminous Italianate landscapes populated with herdsmen, cattle, and classical ruins. A student of his father Pieter Claesz. and later influenced by Jan Baptist Weenix, he became one of the most celebrated and widely collected Dutch masters of pastoral and Mediterranean scenes. His works commanded strong prices during his lifetime and continue to appear regularly at major international auction houses.
