Nathan Lyons (1930, 2016) was an influential American photographer, educator, and curator who played a pivotal role in establishing photography as a fine art in the United States. He was a co-founder of the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York, where he taught and mentored generations of photographers, and he served as an associate director at the George Eastman House. His own photographic work, particularly his sequenced book projects, explored vernacular American culture and the poetic possibilities of juxtaposed images.
