Mary Ellen Mark

Mary Ellen Mark (1940, 2015) was an American documentary photographer renowned for her deeply humanistic and empathetic portrayals of marginalized communities, including the homeless, sex workers, and institutionalized individuals. Her long-term projects, such as her work on the residents of Ward 81 at Oregon State Hospital and her documentation of street youth in Seattle, established her as one of the most important social documentary photographers of the 20th century.
