Mary Beale (1633, 1699) was one of the first professional female painters in England, renowned for her accomplished portraits of clergy, aristocrats, and intellectuals during the Restoration period. She ran a thriving studio in London, often assisted by her husband Charles Beale, and is celebrated for her naturalistic style influenced by Sir Peter Lely. Her extensive body of work and meticulous studio notebooks make her one of the best-documented artists of 17th-century Britain.
