Marius-Jean-Antonin Mercié was a celebrated French sculptor and painter, born in Toulouse in 1845, who became one of the most prominent academic artists of the Third Republic. He studied under Alexandre Falguière and Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, winning the Prix de Rome in 1868. Mercié gained international fame for works such as 'Gloria Victis' and 'David,' which exemplified his mastery of bronze casting and his ability to blend classical idealism with emotional realism.
