Marcellus Coffermans was a Flemish Renaissance painter active in Antwerp from 1549 to 1581, known for devotional panels, small-scale altarpieces, and copies after earlier masters. He worked in an archaic style rooted in the Flemish Primitives, drawing inspiration from Gerard David, Hugo van der Goes, Rogier van der Weyden, and the graphic work of Martin Schongauer. His prolific Antwerp workshop exported numerous works to the Spanish and Portuguese markets, where his old-fashioned devotional style was highly appreciated.
