Jules Bastien-Lepage
French(November 1, 1848 – 1884)
Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848, 1884) was a French naturalist painter celebrated for his unflinching, compassionate portrayals of rural peasant life, most notably in his native village of Damvillers in the Meuse region. He bridged academic tradition and the emerging realist movement, influencing a generation of painters across Europe and Britain with works such as 'Joan of Arc' and 'Les Foins' (Haymaking). Despite his brief career cut short by illness at age 36, his meticulous plein-air technique and emotional sincerity earned him international acclaim during his lifetime and sustained demand at major auction houses.
