John Russell (1858, 1930) was an Australian Impressionist painter who studied under Fernand Cormon in Paris, where he became a close friend of Vincent van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. He spent much of his career painting on the rugged coast of Belle-Île in Brittany, developing a vibrant, light-filled style influenced by Monet and the French Impressionists. His work, long underappreciated, has gained significant recognition through major auction sales and retrospectives in Australia and Europe.
