Jean-Baptiste-Paulin Guérin was a French portrait painter born in Toulon in 1783, known for his refined and psychologically penetrating portrayals of aristocratic and bourgeois subjects during the Restoration and July Monarchy periods. A student of Jacques-Louis David, he achieved considerable success at the Paris Salon and was appointed official painter to King Louis XVIII. His works are noted for their elegant draftsmanship and luminous use of color in the Neoclassical tradition.
