James McBey (1883, 1959) was a Scottish painter and etcher renowned for his evocative landscapes, portraits, and scenes of North Africa and the Middle East. Largely self-taught, he rose to prominence as an official British war artist during World War I, documenting the Egyptian and Palestinian campaigns with striking etchings. His mastery of etching and watercolour, combined with his romantic, atmospheric style, made him one of the most celebrated printmakers of the early twentieth century.
