Works
The inlaid war club from Fiji represents the extraordinary craftsmanship of indigenous Fijian artisans who produced ceremonial and functional weapons of exceptional artistic merit during the 18th and 19th centuries. These clubs, known as 'ula' or various regional names, were elaborately decorated with geometric inlay work using pearl shell, ivory, and other materials, serving as both battlefield weapons and powerful symbols of chiefly status and mana. Highly sought after by European collectors and institutions from the colonial period onward, Fijian inlaid war clubs regularly appear at major auction houses including Sotheby's, Christie's, and Bonhams as prized examples of Oceanic tribal art.
